Ringing in the New Year with an Appletini!

Can you believe 2011 is almost here? With the busy time of holiday preparations behind me, it seems as if the last few days of 2010 are creeping by. Which is not a complaint at all! I love it when it feels like three extra hours have been added to my day! I decided to take a break from creating for our January release (which is going to be BIG BIG BIG!) and pull out the Merry Little Cocktail set for a New Year's card. I started with a piece of gold stardream paper for the card base and settled on a non-traditional color combo for the rest. Actually, I couldn't decide what was 'traditional' for New Year's so maybe this is the new traditional!? I colored two of the drinks from the stamp set to fit with our preferences here at the VanBruggen house. Jon prefers red wine and an appletini tops my list! I colored the drinks with Copic markers, added rhinestones and Lime Stickles for bling, and a little glossy accents to finish them off. The ribbon is Cream Accordion and I added a strip of 1/4" sticky tape to the bottom of the ribbon and covered it with gold glitter. In the background I stamped the champagne bubbles in London Fog ink. The sentiment is also from the Merry Little Cocktail set and was punched out with a Stampin' Up punch and attached with a mini clothespin.

I hope you all have some fun plans to ring in the New Year! We're planning a pretty quiet celebration... going out to eat at a new restaurant, reflecting on the blessings of the past year, and setting some goals for the new year. Thank you so much to all of you who stop by the Taylored Expressions blog and store! Your support really means the world to me! It has been such a joy to watch my small dream grow into something more than I imagined. Thank you again for your support in 2010 and I wish you all the best in 2011!

Happy New Year!

Downtown Diva - Shop 'til you Drop

Thank you for all of your advice about our cat scratching issue! Despite Jen's unnerving story about her cat getting stuck in the carpet, I'm going to go ahead and purchase the Soft Paws today. As much as I want to get the hot pink ones, I think I'll stick with the clear and maybe even fool Morris into thinking those are his real claws. Probably not, huh? :) I'll keep you posted on how it goes! While Jon was watching Iowa play in the Insight Bowl last night, I decided to steal some time away in my stamp room. For the most part I usually enjoy watching football, but by this time of the year I've had enough! So I popped in a movie and pulled out an old favorite, Downtown Diva, to create what I call a "fussy card." Sometimes it's just fun to fuss with all the little details and I was in that kind of mood last night. I still had the Tickled Pink patterned paper on my desk so I started by coloring the images with Copics to match the paper. The little shoppers are from a separate image in the set so after coloring, I cut them out and popped them up on foam tape. I added a Red Rhinestone cherry to each Cuppie along with some Island Lagoon rhinestones to define the corners. I also added Glossy Accents to all the windows. And then my favorite little part is the shopping bag embellishment! I've had these little bags in my stash for as long as I can remember so I decorated it with patterned paper to match, punched a sentiment for the front, and added a bit of tissue to the inside of the bag. I had such fun with my fussy card, but maybe I'll do sweet and simple tomorrow!

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Alternatives to De-Clawing a Cat

So by the title of this post you can probably tell that I have something non-stamping to share with you today. You all know how much we love our cat Morris. He's just a big, cuddly, fluffy ball of love! And he lets me dress him which is just icing on the cake for me. Speaking of dressing Morris, he wanted me to show you his Christmas sweater. Here's Morris with my sister Whitney while she was visiting. Yes, it has a hood and a big Christmas tree on the back! He looks like little red riding hood, don't you think? I've told you all the reasons why we love Morris, but there's one thing he does that we can't handle anymore. Morris still has all of his claws and while he never uses them on his human friends, he has no problem ripping apart our new carpet on a daily basis! I find pieces of our living room carpet stuck in his claws, throughout his fur, and scattered all over the house. We've tried everything! We clip his nails regularly, he refuses to use the two scratch towers we bought, and he doesn't respond to "NO, MORRIS" (Do any cats respond to 'No'?). We don't want to de-claw Morris, but we also don't want to replace our carpet again. So here's the reason for my post today... I've been reading about alternatives to de-clawing and I came across Soft Paws. I must say that I laughed out loud looking at these cats with multi-colored claws and thinking "Morris will never go for this." He's a pretty laid back cat, but what cat would let you glue hot pink nail caps to their claws!? Have any of you tried Soft Paws? Or do you have any other ideas of what we could do to stop Morris from scratching the carpet? All ideas are welcome!

A Batch of Birthday Wishes!

Happy Birthday, Jodi! Today I'm joining together with several of Jodi's friends to celebrate her birthday with a special blog hop! I've had the pleasure of hanging out with Jodi in real life, but it has been way too long. I'm seriously missing her adorable New Yawk accent and giggly laugh! Jodi, I hope you have a wonderful day celebrating with all of your favorite people and a few sweets too! I decided to whip up a batch of birthday wishes using the What's Cookin' set paired with patterned papers from the My Mind's Eye Tickled Pink collection. I paper pieced the mixer to create a cute polka dot version... I think Kitchen Aid needs a real polka dot mixer! I layered the image panel onto a Lacey Square from Spellbinders and popped it up on foam tape. I added a little ribbon from my stash and finished it off with a measuring spoon cut out with one of the dies from the Kitchen Accessories set. The sentiment is from Bakery Business.

Now hop along to Tori's blog and check out her fabulous birthday creation! And when you're finished with the hop, head over and wish the birthday girl a happy day! Thanks for stopping by today!

Celebrate the Season & Christmas Tea Party Recipes

Is it time yet? Is it time? I can't wait! Have you seen that Target commercial with the rewind of little kids opening gifts on Christmas morning? That song has been stuck in my head for days... the part "Is it time yet? Is it time? I can't wait!" I've been decorating sugar cookies, wrapping last minute gifts, and dancing around the house with that song in my head! Just in case you'd like to get the same song stuck in your head, I found it on YouTube here (you can thank me later!). *grin* It's amazing how my excitement for Christmas has changed as I've gotten older. Now instead of looking forward to opening a new Sony Walkman (the coolest tape player ever), Lite Brite (they still sell these!?), or pretty pink bike with purple streamers, I'm looking forward to Christmas Eve service, family dinner, and watching my family open the gifts I made for them. I have one more card to show you before the holidays have officially come and gone. I stole a little time away in my stamp room yesterday and pulled out one of my favorites from last year, Holiday Wonder. If you visit our home during the holidays you'll find that I have a thing for snowmen. It's almost as bad as my 'thing' for cupcakes that takes over during the rest of the year. We have a snowman themed Christmas tree, porcelain snowmen, snowman snow globes, plates, mugs, candle holders, cookie trays, and candy dishes. So it seemed only appropriate that I create a snowman card to celebrate the season!

I stamped the snowman in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and colored him with Copics. I added a little bit of white liquid applique as the snow, some red rhinestones on his hat, and a bit of Crystal Stickles to really bling it on. The patterned paper is from the Doodlebug Winter Wonderland collection. For the snowflake embellishment I cut two layers using the Winter Wonderland Snowflake die, one from cardstock and one from transparency (which you can't really see in the picture) and secured them together with a brad from the December Key Ingredients kit.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! Many of you have emailed requesting recipes from the Christmas Tea Party I posted earlier this week. Most of the recipes came from Midwest Living magazine, but a few are old family favorites. Enjoy!

Christmas Tea Party Recipes

A Christmas Tea Party

Hey everybody! I've been enjoying my little break to spend more time with family and friends, but I thought I'd stop in to show you a few pictures of one of the things that's been keeping me busy! It's always fun to gather friends, family, and neighbors around the holidays. I want to share some pictures of the Christmas Tea Party we recently hosted. Now, when I say "we".... I mean mostly my mom. I helped make the invitations, but she handed them out, decorated her house beautifully, and prepared the most scrumptious buffet! All of the mothers, daughters, and grandmas who came had a great time and enjoyed the tea as well. I know your jaws are probably dropping as you realize that I actually remembered my camera for the occasion! *grin* If you're curious about some of the foods you see, here's a list of the spread we enjoyed: Cinnamon Pretzels, Holiday Chex Mix, Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bread, Apple Bread, Carrot Bread, Spice Cake, Pecan Tassies, Caramel Heavenlies, Chocolate Cupcakes, and Broccoli Quiche. Mmmmmm.... is your mouth watering!? If not, take a look at these pictures!

My sister was visiting last week too and it was fun to have her around. Here she is with the family dog, Marley. It wouldn't be a tea party without a dressed up dachshund! Marley made an appearance to properly lick all of the party plates clean. :) Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you're all having fun with holiday preparations!

December Key Ingredients Now Available!

Good morning! We're halfway to another weekend and I'm especially excited because my sister is flying in from California today. It will be so nice to have our whole family together for the next week. We're planning sister spa day, lots of baking, home-cooked meals by mom, and a gift exchange while she's here!

Today is also exciting because the December Key Ingredients kit is being delivered to our subscribers and it's also available to purchase for those of you who aren't a part of our kit club! This month's kit features patterned paper from the Wintertime collection by Echo Park. The pretty patterns in this snowy serenade will bring the blustery outdoors into the comfort of your warm stamp space! This month I challenged our Key Ingredients Design Team to create a set of post-holiday thank you cards. I love working ahead and now I have something special to say thank you for the thoughtful gifts we receive this Christmas.

I started by stamping snowflakes from the Winter Wonderland stamp set onto Choice Snow White cardstock. The ink colors I used are Colorbox Maroon, Colorbox Prussian Blue, Memento Rich Cocoa, and Memento Summer Sky. The Thanks Snow Much sentiment is from the Penguin Pals set. I used the small, medium, and large scallop border dies cut from patterned paper, sponged the edges, and layered them with foam tape. Unfortunately, winter lasts much longer than the holiday season, but that will give me plenty of time to play with this beautiful papers!

You'll definitely want to check out the fabulous thank-you cards that our design team has created: Lynn Put, Melody Rupple, Jen Tapler, Lisa Hjulberg, and Jessica Diedrich. And stop by the December Key Ingredients inspiration gallery throughout the month as our team adds more fabulous creations!

If you're already a Key Ingredients subscriber then you know these paper-crafting goodies are on their way to your doorstep. If you're not a current subscriber then we'd love to have you join us! We offer the latest patterned paper collections paired with unique embellishments and bring them right to your doorstep each month at a great value. This month's kit includes the following supplies pictured on the left:

20 sheets of double-sided patterned papers from the Echo Park Wintertime Collection

12 sheets of 8.5" x 11" cardstock (2 each of 6 colors)

5 yards of ribbon (1 yard each of 5 different styles)

25 Snowflake Brads

Crystal Tiny Twinkles

Embellie Gellie sample (click here to see a video on using twinkles with Embellie Gellie)

Each kit also comes with a full-color supply list for reference and a plastic case to store all of your supplies! Taking a TESC break...

Hi friends! I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend! It was an exciting day yesterday as we had our first blizzard here in central Iowa. In fact, I can still hear Jon scraping the driveway outside this morning. Actually, he decided it was time to get a snowblower and I certainly can't blame him!

I was kind of hoping that the snow would hold off until the new year (wishful thinking, huh?), but the freshly fallen snow made a beautiful landscape for our train ride through the scenic valley yesterday. We joined Jon's sister, brother-in-law, and our three nephews on the tour. Our 3-year-old nephew Tyson sat next to me during the trip and wasn't so sure at the beginning. He leaned over to whisper, "Aunt Taylor, I want get off." But after cookies and hot chocolate he was happily singing carols with the rest of us! This is a picture through the window of our train car as we passed over a narrow bridge above the valley over 150 feet below. I don't have an aversion to heights, but this wouldn't have been a fun ride if I did!

As the holidays approach each year, it's memories like these that I want to make. I'm reminded of things I want to do (like decorate sugar cookies), parties I want to host (like holiday cocktails; a cookie exchange), and traditions I want to make a part of our family gatherings (like dipping pretzels and trimming the tree). Instead, I often find myself rushing through traffic, stressing over gifts, and feeling guilty for not celebrating the true reason for the season. And so I'm making an effort to slow down this holiday season, spend more time with family, and pursue those traditions that will hopefully become a part of family gatherings for many years!

As I'm sure you can imagine, slowing down requires carving out time in my schedule. And so the Sketch Crew and I will be taking a break from the TESC sketches. I can't tell you exactly when we'll return, but I'm sure you haven't seen the last of us! I want to say a HUGE thank you to the talented group of gals: Sherrie, Lisa, Jami, Melissa, Alice, Rachel, Lori, and Monika who have shared their fabulous creations week after week! While we're away, you can still get inspired by previous TESC sketches by downloading our free sketch books:

You also may have noticed that I've been taking some small breaks from posting here on my blog. This is in part because we're preparing for a HUGE January release, but also so that I can fully enjoy this holiday season with my family. I hope you'll all take time to do the same!

December Release Roundup

We just celebrated our December release at Taylored Expressions almost a week ago and it was filled with lots of fun new products... a little something for you and a little something for those on your gift list! I'm always so proud of what our talented design team creates and it's a fun task for me to search through their projects and come up with my favorites to share during our release roundup. And here they are!

Both Jackie and Karen G. used the Friendship Blooms set for a completely different look. Jackie's purple and orange combination make her card fabulously soft and sweet while Karen's pop of red gives her card a unique and bold look!

You can tell these two talented ladies have a similar yet very unique shabby chic style and I love it! Melissa used a fabulous doily and some extra large ribbon to set her image apart while our guest designer Mona added many small embellishments to bring her creation to life. I love all the lacey goodness here!

Karen M. and Tori both decided to create gift sets using the Crafty Petite sets. Karen little box of buttons would make the perfect gift! I especially love the pretty little bows she tied on both projects! And Tori's sweet sewing basket would make any fabric lover swoon! I love the sweet tag with the matching card.

Danielle & Jodi both used the Sew Happy stamp set to create these fabulous projects. Danielle's wooden purse filled with tags is so sweet. There's nothing I love more than Danielle's tags! And Jodi's card is a sight to behold with layered scallops all wrapped in lace and adorned with a yummy vintage button!

As you'll see from these two projects, we can always count on Sankari and Regina for clever creations! The mini note wallet is such a cute way to store those small gift cards and tags! And I love Regina's use of the Scallops & Circles impression plate to create this "Control the Chaos" note catcher. It would be the perfect addition to any kitchen refrigerator!

Donna and Charmaine got their craft on with the crafty petites too! I know we all have lots of those mini sewing kits around and Donna's packaging is perfect for safekeeping in your purse or a sweet little gift! Charmaine's cuteness features the sheet from the Knit Wit set paired with my favorite sentiment...it makes me giggle!

And last, but certainly not least, our Whimsical Wishes illustrator Nancy created this beautiful card using her latest Friendship Blooms stamp set. I love the tone on tone embossed leaves in the background and the tiny pearl detailing on the leafy branch!

So there you have my favorite projects from this release! I know tons of you found some favorites from this release too and you may have noticed that the majority of our new Crafty Petite sets are sold out. We're hoping to have them back in stock within the next week!

In the meantime, we have the new October Afternoon Campfire collection just in as well as new embellishments (stickers & buttons) for OA's Modern Homemaker and Schoolhouse to satisfy your creative sweet tooth!

An early Christmas present...

I don't have any stamping to share with you today (I think if I shared a picture of my stamp space I might scare you all away forever!), but I do have something else that was pretty exciting! Jon surprised me with tickets to the Carrie Underwood concert on Saturday night! He had asked me "What do we have going on this weekend?" an unusual number of times during the week and finally surprised me with the tickets on Friday night. He's not a big Carrie fan, so he arranged for my mom to go with me! How sweet, huh?

Have you been to a Carrie Underwood concert? If not, you are in for some serious entertainment! I couldn't believe my eyes with the extravagant props and her amazing costumes, not to mention her beautiful voice and fun songs! As you all know by now, I'm the dork who forgets her camera everywhere she goes so I took these photos with my cell phone. The quality isn't the best, but hopefully you can still appreciate the amazing-ness of it all!

Yes...she really did ride in a flying truck over the top of screaming fans, swing from a giant tree limb, and rise over ten feet in the air on a platform! Crazy amazing!

*still smiling about my early Christmas present*
